Scania Angers Workers Demand Hiring and Better Conditions

At Scania Angers, where 1,500 employees produce heavy goods vehicles, 200 employees per team walked off at least two hours a day, from June 28 to 30, to express their dissatisfaction.

The workers are demanding hiring: sick leave is poorly replaced, the management has massive recourse to temporary workers, to the point that there are 500 temporary workers out of the 1,500 employees. As for parking conditions, 800 parking spaces are not enough at the crossroads of the two overlapping teams. It’s a constant stress for the afternoon shift.

Another dispute, the breaks are shortened: they are only 10 minutes, knowing that smokers must leave the company since the smoking areas have been removed around the workshops.

The management has suddenly lost its deafness and proposes to create “working groups”. The workers, who have made themselves heard for the first time in years, have understood that it is their movement, even a minority one, that is changing the situation. And as one shop steward put it, “nothing prevents us from starting again”.
