Sportswear manufacturer Adidas is suspending sales of Germany’s national soccer jerseys, which bear the number 44 on the back. The reason – heavy criticism about their design, which reminds of a Nazi symbol. This was reported to DPA by a spokesperson of the company.
“We will be blocking jersey customization in our online store,” said spokesman Oliver Bruggen.
Social media users recently noticed that the number 44 in the new jersey design, unveiled last month, resembles the logo of the Nazi paramilitary organization Schutzstaffel.
According to Brügen, “The German Football Federation (DFB) and its partner – the company 11teamsports are responsible for the design of the names and numbers”.
“People from around 100 countries work at Adidas, our company is about promoting racial diversity and inclusion, and as a company we actively oppose xenophobia, anti-Semitism, violence and hatred in any form,” Bruggen added.
