Scandal with Purchases: Ukrainian Parliament Discusses Alleged Corruption in Defense Ministry

“Of course, the parliamentary committee has the right to raise any question, because parliament is control. Please come prepared and answer all questions. And then do not make any strange proposals, bets, and so on and so forth into the public plane . This is a discrediting of Ukraine,” Podolyak said.

He noted that in the status of the present, Ukrainian politicians should demonstrate by their example that the state has changed.

“Today we must demonstrate that the state has changed at least a little. This means that if you are in doubt, then you must answer the question so that there are no doubts. Because society pays a big price and has the right to doubt us. But, if we want to be such that society supports us, then we should not argue and respond with aggression to questions, but answer them and admit that we are wrong,” the adviser to the head of the President’s Office explained.

Podolyak said that in such a situation it is necessary to wait until investigative actions are carried out.

“And when the matter is brought to an end, we will be able to factually comment on what it was, who is to blame and why it is to blame,” he summed up.

Scandal with the purchase of jackets in the Ministry of Defense

Recently, an investigation appeared in the media that the Ministry of Defense allegedly purchased winter jackets for the military from the Turkish company Vector avia hava araçlari, but at an inflated price. The price of jackets at the time of delivery, according to the investigation, tripled. In addition, the media found out that actually not winter jackets, but summer jackets arrived from Turkey to Ukraine.

The journalist Mikhail Tkach also spoke about this, adding that the nephew of the people’s deputy Gennady Kasai, who is a member of the VR defense committee, was allegedly involved in the deal.

This week, a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Anti-Corruption Policy was held on this issue with the participation of representatives of the Ministry of Defense. After the meeting, the head of the committee, Radina, said that representatives of the ministry could not answer most of the questions of people’s deputies, and tried to demonstrate “some kind of jacket of unknown origin”, on the tag of which there was a different contract number than in the invoice for the supply, which was examined by the committee.

Reznikov’s proposal

As Reznikov told the publication, he proposed a couple to journalist Mikhail Tkach and MP Anastasia Radina, who heads the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Anti-Corruption Policy.

“If it turns out that the Ministry of Defense really supplied 180,000 summer jackets instead of winter ones, then I am writing a letter of resignation. If it turns out that 180,000 winter jackets were supplied, and not summer ones, then MP Anastasia Radina resigns her mandate, and journalist Mikhail Tkach leaves the publication and stops doing journalism for 3 years,” the minister said.
