/ world today news/ Two leading Macedonian writers will be presented in the first days of the Book Fair at the NDK. They are Vladimir Plavevski and Frosina Parmakovska, whose books “The Swordsman of Vardar” and “Cherry Chronicle” are finalists for the biggest Macedonian literary award – “Novel of the Year”. A translation by Tanya Popova and an edition of “Persei” are published in Bulgarian.
So far so good, except for the fact that the information circulated by the BNR is about translation, because to call the normalization from a dialect to a literary language a “translation” borders on linguistic absurdity. However, what is more outrageous is the fact that presenting two novelists, BNR had neatly arranged an interview in which the presenter quietly listened to her interlocutors, did not react to any statement, and quite a few of them raised the least questions, not to mention a comment and NOTE !? – Our national radio had tried to provide a “translator” who would guide us through the thickets of the Macedonian language and reduce it to the literary norm. About the qualities of the so-called we will not talk about translation, we will only pay attention to the fact that sometimes dialectal possibilities are more colorful than what the literary language offers, and in this particular case we were once again convinced of this fact.
Otherwise, we learned from Mr. Plavevski that in the novel “The Swordsman of Vardar” there is an exciting and tense plot in which the images of the shipmen and the Ilinden comites appear. Already after the first one, it becomes perfectly clear and juicy, due to the fact that it is in a Southwestern dialect sentence: “It is of interest to today’s readers who are addicted to the Internet and enslaved to it”, the presenter intervened with the appeal “Let Tanya (the translator – b.ed. .) to translate”, with which he literally made his listeners into monkeys, denying their ability to navigate the sometimes easier-to-understand Macedonian dialect than the Trun or Rhodope, for example. Later, Plavevski informed us that his plot is populated, apart from heroes, by many mythical creatures, which he was not sure that here in Bulgaria we know them, but in Macedonia they were abundant – like samodives and vampires (“translated” by the “translator” as vampires, which is questionable, because in a number of Bulgarian dialects, vampires are those characters who fight with vampires, and have a special mythological power, and in terms of mythology and the characters that inhabit it, dialects are fairly uniform). Otherwise, the book was about “pre-Linden” Macedonia, when that country “became nationally aware”. Complete silence in the studio, in which we should have clearly read agreement, met this astonishing finding about the national consciousness of Macedonia, where at this very period everyone was feverishly preparing for an uprising to break free and join Mother Bulgaria (the phraseology is not the editor’s ).
Frosina Parmakovska, the author of the “Cherry Chronicle” turned out to have written a novel about growing up, love and chance, but all this the listener had to learn again with the help of the translator, who should perhaps consider whether the normalization of a text is only a matter of money, or of personal and national self-respect and dignity. The practice abounds in various possibilities – from normalization, to translation from regiolect to literary language or others. under.
Is it right, since the Institute of the Bulgarian Language at the BAS has an official opinion on the so-called Macedonian literary language, and this institute is also the main codifying body on language issues in our country, let everyone do as they like, read-unlearned, studied-unlearned, prepared-unprepared? And from the high rostrum of the BNR, which should be particularly precise in terms of its messages to its listeners, who pay taxes in Bulgaria and want the Bulgarian position to be articulated clearly and consistently first, regardless of the diversity of opinions.
Otherwise, the abbreviation MNR (Macedonian People’s Radio) and a studio for broadcasting directly from Skopje would be more suitable for them. And to recruit translators, of course, mostly with good Albanian…
