SCANDAL THAT SPOTTED FOOTBALL IN THE UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
–
Last Tuesday, football was again stained with an act of racism by the fourth official in the duel between PSG and Istanbul for the European Champions League. Everything was going well in the Parc des Princes in the French capital and, in an act of prominence, the referee assistant insulted the assistant of the Turkish squad by saying the following: “Expel this black man”.
A reprehensible act that culminated in the abandonment of the pitch by the 22 players. This is the controversial point to be discussed in this month’s column… What will be the sanction that UEFA should impose on this character?
First, we open the discussion by saying that soccer is a sport that unites the masses on a plain, street, schoolyard, field and property, regardless of gender and skin color. Consequently, it is logical that the European Union Football Association (UEFA) should apply an expulsion to this character from any tournament at the level of clubs and national teams of the old continent.
Linked to the first point, the attitude of the players of Paris Saint-Germain towards their rival is applaudable in the abandonment of the field, because the main phrase of this tournament on the side of the uniforms is “No to Racism”, being a campaign of the same confederation in the fight against racism inside and outside the stadiums; so it is incredible that the fourth has not thought about this when it is a topic that is being eradicated in the discipline.
UEFA has to act and prove its position in its own campaign. It is a matter that should not go unpunished, be it a footballer, manager, referee, etc. Right now the best the referee can do is accept his mistake rather than make excuses.
What will happen? Only time will tell.
