the essentials in brief
- The head of the Zurich-West prison, Marc Eiermann, has resigned.
- Jean-Philippe Pinto (center) criticized the timing of the resignation.
- Eiermann’s deputy will take over his position for the time being; a replacement is being sought.
A surprising departure shocks the Zurich-West prison: prison director Marc Eiermann resigns, reports “Züri Today”. He has been at the helm since it opened two years ago and played a key role in its development. His deputy will take over management for the time being.
The prison is a central part of the new police and justice center (PJZ) in Zurich. But despite its importance, it is currently not in a good place: planning errors and poor personnel policies in particular are casting a shadow over the project.
“Unfavorable time” for a change
Jean-Philippe Pinto (center), President of the Audit Commission in the Cantonal Council, criticizes the timing of Eiermann’s resignation. “The timing is bad,” Pinto told “Züri Today”. What particularly bothers him is the fact that the detention center was put into operation one and a half years late.
Some negative headlines have affected the image of the PJZ and the Zurich-West prison: prisoners were mixed up, which meant that the wrong people were released. Due to planning errors, 82 additional jobs had to be created, which led to additional costs of around 10 million francs. All of these incidents occurred during the term of Justice Minister Jacqueline Fehr (SP).
