Scandal of broadcast sex scenes, Algerian private TV station shut down by government

Algiers

The authority Algeria ordered the closure of a private TV after broadcasting scenes deemed offensive. The television station is known for showing scandalous sex scenes.

“The Audiovisual Regulatory Authority (ARAV) has decided to permanently shut down the El Adjwaa channel,” the official APS news outlet AFP said on Wednesday (16/11/2022).

The decision was made after the TV channel aired an American film that included a sexually explicit scene between a nearly naked man and woman on Sunday night (11/13). Angry internet users shared images of the scene widely on social media.

ARAV said that the scenes in the TV show were offensive and contradictory to the values and religion of the Algerian people.

The TV channel apologized on Facebook for what it called a mistake and said goodbye to its viewers.

ARAV last year temporarily shut down private TV El Hayet following the controversy over Algerian resistance hero Emir Abdelkader.

The Algerian state had a monopoly on broadcasting for five decades after independence from France in 1962.

More than 50 private TV channels have been created since the law was changed in 2012, but only six of them have received provisional approval to open studios in Algeria.
