British Prime Minister Rishi SunakRishi Sunak – British economist and politician. Rishi Sunak was born on 12 May 1980 in Southampton, was criticized last night for showing he didn’t understand ordinary people after asking a homeless man at a charity event if he “worked in business” and if he wanted to work in the finance sector, Reuters reported.
Sunak, a former Goldman Sachs banker and one of Britain’s richest men, was serving breakfast at a London homeless shelter on Friday when he struck up a conversation with a man who identified himself as Dean.
“Do you work in business?” the prime minister asked the man at one point in the conversation, handing him a plate of sausages, toast and eggs.
“No, I’m homeless. I’m actually homeless,” the man replied.
Angela Rayner, deputy leader of the opposition Labor Party, posted a video clip of the incident on Twitter, calling it “excruciating” to watch.
Sunak took power in October and became the wealthiest occupant of 10 Downing Street at a time when the country is grappling with a cost-of-living crisis.
His embarrassing exchange with the homeless man began when the man asked Sunak if he was “fixing the economy’s problems.”
When the homeless man later said he was interested in business and finance, Sunak replied that he had also worked in finance before asking, “Is that something you would like to do?”
“Yeah, I wouldn’t mind,” Dean replied. “But I want to spend Christmas first,” the man added.
