Danish billionaire and former Olympic medalist, Andreas Helgstrand (46), banned from the national team in dressage after accusations of mistreatment of horses. Norwegian Olympic participant Siril Helljesen shocked and disappointed by the news. Danske TV 2 broadcast the documentary “The Secrets of the Horse Billionaire”. Helgstrand admits violence against horses and the Danish Riding Association distance themselves from the unacceptable treatment of horses. The Norwegian Equestrian Association and Nina Johnsen emphasize the importance of horse welfare and strongly distance themselves from all mistreatment of horses. Show more

It is Danish TV 2 and the program Operation X that have broadcast a documentary with “The Horse Billionaire’s Secrets”.

Andreas Helgstrand (46) has been at the very top of the world in dressage. He is now excluded from all national team activities.

– It is both annoying and sad if, because of cases like this, equestrian sport is associated with abuse of horses, says president of the Danish Riding Association, Jakob Blicher Ravnsbo, to Danish TV 2.

Helgstrand has admitted after the programs that violence has been perpetrated against horses at Helgstrand Dressage.

– Of course, I have been shocked all day about this. Because I had never seen it like that here. And that must be corrected, he says to Danish TV 2.

Nevertheless, he tried to stop the TV channel’s documentary. However, Helgstrand had to give up after TV 2 had been right in two courts. He now states that it is okay for the images to be shown.

– We strongly distance ourselves from the unacceptable riding, training methods and treatment of the horses that the programs show, says a statement from the Danish Equestrian Federation.

The documentary was made using the journalistic method often called “wallraffing”. A female reporter worked for a month on the farm of Helgstrand near Aalborg. She has been a horse groomer and has secretly filmed the methods that have been used at Helgstrand.

The former Norwegian Olympic participant Siril Helljesen is among the Norwegians who have met Andreas Helgstrand:

– As a professional trainer and rider, we have been to the joint arena several times. I was shocked and disappointed by the content of the documentary. This is riding and a view of horse management that I strongly distance myself from.

– Horse welfare is at the top of the agenda for my own riding and in my work as a trainer, and is also one of the core values of the Norwegian Equestrian Association.

This is confirmed by the equestrian association’s sports manager Nina Johnsen:

– We strongly distance ourselves from all mistreatment of horses. It is one of our core values. It is important to put horse welfare on the agenda at all levels of the organisation. We also cooperate a lot with the other Nordic countries on this.

The Danish national team rider Carina Cassøe Krüth calls on Instagram for an internal showdown.

– It is certainly necessary to change the culture and correct how education and training of horses is viewed in general. When all this is written, all riders should reflect on how we ride and train on a daily basis.
