The suspension of Marius Gersbeck at Hertha BSC caused a stir. A former VfL Bochum talent could benefit.
After being relegated from the Bundesliga, Hertha BSC has not yet completely assembled its squad. At least in goal, however, there seemed to be clarity early on. Marius Gersbeck, who was brought back from Karlsruher SC, was scheduled as the first goalkeeper.
But the scandal in the training camp surrounding the 28-year-old threw up the plans of the Berliners. During the camp in Austria, he had a nocturnal altercation with a local. The police began investigations, Hertha drew the appropriate conclusions and suspended Gersbeck until further notice.
It cannot be ruled out that he will still be between the posts at the start of the season against Fortuna Düsseldorf on the Saturday after next (July 29) – but is considered unlikely.
A former VfL Bochum talent could benefit: Tjark Ernst. The 20-year-old trained at the Revierklub for eleven years. Last summer he moved to the capital, was supposed to gain match practice in the second team and be introduced to the licensed team.
Ex-Bochum Ernst with a strong performance at the end of the Bundesliga
The plan has worked so far. Ernst impressed in training with the pros and in his U23 appearances. On the final day of the season, when Hertha was already relegated, BSC coach Pal Dardai rewarded the youngster.
Ernst was allowed to play the Bundesliga game against VfL Wolfsburg – and showed a strong performance. “It’s a dream come true for me,” said the son of ex-professional Thomas Ernst after his debut.
According to Kicker, those responsible in Berlin had considered lending Ernst in the new year. But after the Gersbeck incident, he suddenly seems to have good cards for the vacant regular place in goal.
There are four other goalkeepers in the Hertha squad. But last year’s regular keeper Oliver Christensen is said to bring valuable income to the club through a sale. According to the kicker, the suspension of Gersbeck did not change these plans.
Hertha coach Dardai praises Tjark Ernst
The “old lady” Alexander Schwolow also wants to give up after his loan return from FC Schalke 04. He plays no part in Dardai’s plans and wasn’t even taken to the training camp. And the talents Robert Kwasigroch (19) and Tim Goller (18) are more likely to be planned for the professionals.
So there are signs that Hertha is actually starting the mission of resurgence with seriousness between the posts. Unless Gerbseck is pardoned, Christensen will stay – or a new goalkeeper will be hired.
In any case, Dardai seems to trust Ernst: “Tjark does it well, I’m a fan of his. He’s not afraid of the ball, shows a lot of saves,” the club legend praised the native of Stuttgart after a friendly a few days ago.
