Nowadays, QR codes are almost everywhere. Square barcodes are already used in real estate ads, TV commercials and social media posts. The green certificate has made them almost an integral part of our lives, but the popularity of QR codes has a dark side.
Cybercriminals and hackers are increasingly using technology to deceive their victims. Cybersecurity experts report an increase in the misuse of QR codes.
In general, fraudsters create their own malicious QR codes designed to trick unwitting users into passing on their bank or personal information.
After scanning, the codes are forwarded to fake sites that look like a copy of their true prototype. The user can also be redirected directly to a payment site. Another option is to start downloading a virus after the scan.
Experts advise consumers not to trust easily and to pay attention to the sender, his e-mail and the address where he has a QR code. If it looks suspicious, then scanning it would only do harm.
