Scammers get money via chat / police warn urgently and give advice

Fraudsters got money on Tuesday (May 17) with the “WhatsApp scam”. A 60-year-old man from Darmstadt believed the short message from his supposed son and initiated a transfer of over 3,000 euros. The scammers faked an emergency during the chat and asked the 60-year-old for help.

The police therefore urgently warns against transferring money solely on the basis of a WhatsApp message. Be sure to speak to the person asking for the money. To do this, call the number that you know – because: The fake story with the broken mobile phone can be seen through very easily in a matter of seconds.

Another request from your police:

The IBAN sent is an important link to the perpetrators. Please make a note of this exact number. The perpetrators subsequently delete the IBAN in the chat history in order to cover their tracks.
