On Sunday, SC Preußen Münster will face newly promoted SSV Ulm – and that should be a difficult duel. Because at the SCP in particular, failures are increasing and recently there were two complex games, each with different outcomes. But Ulm also has concerns.
So the Prussian series continues. After leaders Dresden (0:1) and second-placed Regensburg (1:2), third-placed SSV Ulm now comes. The “Spatzen” are something like the surprise team of the year; external perception actually saw the SCP as the strongest newcomer from the quartet, which, in addition to Ulm, also includes Lübeck and Unterhaching.
But with 23 points, Ulm is currently significantly better in the table than the SCP – despite the recent 2:3 defeat against Halleschen FC. In Münster, the SSV will be missing some players for the first time. Attacker Lucas Röser (13 games, 2 goals this season) is injured, Romario Rösch (13 appearances, left side) and defender Philipp Maier (3 goals this season in 12 appearances) are both out with yellow suspensions. At least on Friday there was still a question mark behind captain Jo Reichert, who had to take a break with thigh problems, as stated in the Ulm team’s preliminary report.
Things are currently worse for the SCP. In addition to the long-term injured Dominik Schad and Dennis Grote, defense chief Thomas Kok is missing after his red card in Regensburg. Sebastian Mrowca is also injured, and Benjamin Böckle and Rico Preißinger are now also out. It’s no surprise that Ogechika Heil is missing again, now with muscular problems. Heil, who moved from HSV to Münster shortly before the transfer deadline, only played 7 minutes against Mannheim (1:3) and has been out injured since then.

What is more interesting is that there is currently a change in goal. Although Max Schulze Niehues is ready to play again after his gastrointestinal infection, he apparently only sits on the bench against Ulm. Johannes Schenk will probably make his third league appearance for the SCP. Coach Sascha Hildmann had actually always given the impression that Schulze Niehues would play if he was healthy. Especially since he had impressed with strong performances before his infection.
Be that as it may, the SCP faces a challenge against Ulm, both in terms of personnel and sport. The fact that the SCP urgently needs points again for morale and the table after its zero-point week is the most obvious challenge.
See you again with Rühle and Stoll?
Will we see Lennart Stoll again? The now 27-year-old ex-Prussian left Münster for Ulm in 2017 in order to give his studies a lower priority. Stoll has only made three appearances this season and has not been in the squad for the last six games (also due to injury). He was only on the field for a full 90 minutes in the first two games of the season.
Tobias Rühle (32) was something of a crowd favorite in Münster between 2016 and 2019 because of his committed style of play – his late winning goal against FSV Frankfurt will never be forgotten, which brought the SCP enormously important points in the toughest relegation battle in the spring of 2017. Frankfurt was a direct relegation competitor at the time and this victory was doubly important.
In the current season, Rühle only made short appearances in 8 games, but still scored 2 goals. He was never that successful in Münster and from Prussia’s perspective it would like to stay that way…
Kick-off on Sunday: 4:30 p.m
outlook
There has never been a duel between the SCP and SSV Ulm so far. The people of Ulm have had strenuous times behind them. At the end of the 1990s, Ulm worked its way up from the top league to the Bundesliga (1999/2000), then the club was pushed through to the fourth division thanks to a license refusal. Ulm has been playing in the Regionalliga Südwest again since 2016 and has now been promoted together with the SCP.
The best goalscorer is Dennis Chessa (5 goals), Ulm has so far won 3 away games and 1 draw (with 2 only defeats) and has even scored more points away from home (10) than the SCP in their own stadium (9).
