On Saturday, SC Potsdam fans can look forward to a lot of volleyball in the MBS Arena: First (from 2.30 p.m.) the second women’s team in the 2nd League North will be attracting free entry to the home game against second-placed SV Blau-Weiß Dingden , then SC Potsdam welcomes VC Wiesbaden in the 1st Volleyball Bundesliga (from 7 p.m.). The matchday check once again provides useful information about the upcoming first division encounter.
Initial situation: VC Wiesbaden only scored five points in four Bundesliga games this season. That doesn’t sound so good at first. But the truth looks different. They scored one point each against the German champions Allianz MTV Stuttgart and the DVV cup winners SSC Palmberg Schwerin, but lost in the tie-break 2:3. There was also a 3-0 win against Aachen and a 0-3 win against Dresden. The bottom line is that this currently means seventh place. SC Potsdam, on the other hand, is in third place. Wins against Dresden, Aachen and Neuwied are offset by a defeat against Schwerin.
Last season: In the 2022/2023 season, both teams faced each other twice in the league. Last year, a week before Christmas, SC Potsdam won at home 3-1 (25:23, 25:19, 24:26, 25:17). Then the team from the Brandenburg state capital won 3-0 (25:19, 25:13, 25:22) at the VCW in March of this year. Nevertheless, Wiesbaden made it to fourth place in the main round table – just one place behind Potsdam. But then they parted ways. The SCP even managed to get into the final playoffs and thus become runner-up. The VCW was eliminated in the quarterfinal playoffs against Dresden.
Opponent: “Wiesbaden can definitely cause a few surprises in the new season,” warned Potsdam’s head coach Riccardo Boieri before the start of the season. “For example, they hired Izabella Rapacz from Rzeszów for the diagonal position. In addition, Benedikt Frank can continue to rely on proven players such as Tanja Großer, Rene Sain, Rachel Anderson and Nina Herelová.” Boieri believes that the VCW can once again advance into the top 4 of the main round table. Rapacz, Anderson, Großer, Herelová and Sain definitely performed well in the first games.
History: There has been first division volleyball in Wiesbaden since the 2004/2005 season. In 2010, the team from Hesse even became German runner-up. In 2013 and 2018, the VCW reached the DVV Cup finals, but had to admit defeat in each case. Since the 2014/2015 season, the team has played its home games in the newly built sports hall at the German Unity Square. However, he has not yet won a major title. Similar to Potsdam: In addition to two runner-up championships and two cup final appearances, the SCP has managed to win the 2022 Volleyball Super Cup in recent years.
Guest coach: With Benedikt Frank, the Wiesbaden women are trained by an experienced Bundesliga coach. Before his time in Hesse, the 43-year-old already worked for Köpenicker SC, USC Münster and NawaRo Straubing in the Volleyball Bundesliga. With him as head coach, VC Wiesbaden seems to be on an upward trend. In any case, the team from Hesse recently reached the quarter-final playoffs of the Volleyball Bundesliga twice in a row. In the current season, the team is still represented in three competitions: the championship, the DVV Cup and the CEV Challenge Cup.
Tickets: If you want to attend the second division game (Potsdam II vs. Dingden) on Saturday, you don’t need to worry about tickets: entry is free. The situation is different in the first division game. Tickets are available here at the box office, at the well-known ticket offices and online.
