Only seven goals in six games: SC Freiburg is still looking for a goal threat in the Bundesliga. Christian Günter plays a role in the analysis – and the name Serhou Guirassy.
“I won’t say.” This is how Klemens Hartenbach answers an equally simple question: a good year ago, did SC Freiburg have Serhou Guirassy – currently the top scorer in the Bundesliga with ten goals for VfB Stuttgart – on their list?
The Breisgauer sports director doesn’t really want to look at the cards that the SCF had in its hand at the end of the 2022 transfer summer, when Guirassy initially moved to the Swabians on loan from the French club Stade Rennes. Today, around 13 months later, it is clear: they could really use an accurate attacker like the 27-year-old in Freiburg.
After three league games without a win in a row, the mood of the Europa League participants has improved significantly thanks to the 2-0 win against FC Augsburg. But a look at the list of Freiburg’s goalscorers for the current season makes you frown a bit.
SC Freiburg’s top scorers “still have room”
Seven goals were distributed between six different players, plus one opponent’s own goal. A sign of broad quality in the squad? Yes, on the one hand. On the other hand, it also means that the sports club is currently missing a real snapper.
“If you don’t have one, every club misses it,” says sports director Hartenbach in an interview with SWR Sport. At the end of last season, Vincenzo Grifo was Freiburg’s top goalscorer with 15 goals, and Michael Gregoritsch (ten) also reached double figures. After six matchdays, there is no tendency that these two or two other professionals could achieve a similar record in this round.
“A few still have some breathing room,” admits Hartenbach, “but that’s always how it is at SC Freiburg.” Apart from the long-standing noble joker Nils Petersen, there is “a long tradition” in Breisgau that the club simply does not have “strong goalscorers”. And, the manager emphasizes: “We can’t build one either. And we can’t afford the Guirassy class either.” At least a small indication that Freiburg had started courting the services of the center forward, who cost almost ten million euros, a year ago.
When looking for the reasons for the lack of a goal threat, another circumstance also plays an important role for Hartenbach: the serious injury and the long absence of captain Christian Günter. Although the 30-year-old was back in the stadium last Sunday after a hospital stay, the busy winger from the left flank will probably be missing for a longer period due to an infection of a fractured lower arm.
Hartenbach: “Christian made Vince better”
“It’s really tough what we’re losing – not just in terms of sport,” says SCF sports director Hartenbach. Last season, Günter and Grifo formed “a great tandem” on the left side. “Christian made Vince better,” Hartenbach sums it up. And he says his opinion very clearly – unlike Guirassy.
