At 1. FC Union, SC Freiburg is all about the Champions League. Midfielder Eggestein would find participation in it “extraordinary”, teammate Grifo is more reserved.
In the fight for Champions League in the coming season Maximilian Eggestein made an unequivocal declaration of war against his fellow competitor 1. FC Union Berlin before the game of his SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga.
“We want to win,” the midfielder told Sky TV. Fifth in the table Freiburg and the Fourth Union each have 56 points and will meet in Berlin this Saturday (3.30 p.m.). The top four teams in the Bundesliga qualify for the premier class.
Recently two bankruptcies in a row for Freiburg
“In any case, we are very excited about the Champions League and want to finish the season well. We would like to reward ourselves for a great season – although we have actually already done so because we will definitely be playing internationally,” said the 26-year-old Eggestein.
SC Freiburg is traveling to Berlin with the handicap of having lost twice in a row: both in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup and on the 31st Bundesliga matchday against third-placed RB Leipzig.
Union are unbeaten at home for 21 games. “Union is generally uncomfortable as an opponent. You have a good audience. That releases energy in them,” said Eggestein. From his point of view, there is a lot at stake for both clubs. “They can achieve something that is extraordinary for a club like Union. Just like us,” said the former junior international.
Contrary to what Eggestein said, his teammate Vicenzo Grifo didn’t see any hype about the premier class in the Breisgau region. “We don’t really use the term Champions League. It’s not discussed at all in the cabin either,” said the Italian national player to the “Sport1” portal.
Nevertheless, Grifo is also spurred on by the prospect of playing against top stars like Lionel Messi in the Champions League. “When you get to play against players like that, it’s just the harvest that you’ve earned throughout your career. Playing against such stars is a wonderful thing.”
