You’ve got a taste for it.
SC Freiburg is playing its second Euro season in a row. Even before the third Europa League matchday at FK TSC Backa Topola (Thursday, 6.45 p.m.) in the northern Serbian province, the direction of travel is clear: it should be at least second place in the group.
And that’s why coach Christian Streich (58) and his stars are taking the Euro risk!
“This game is the absolute priority. “We don’t deal with Leverkusen at all,” explains Streich. That means: nothing to do with rotating and sparing yourself before the cracker at Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday (5.30 p.m.). Despite the small squad, the European Cup in Breisgau is now more than just freestyle.
Only Roland Sallai (26) could be the only regular player to sit on the bench after several games in a row. With Gregoritsch and Höler recovering, Streich has strong attack options.

The reason for the full Euro commitment is clear: with a win, Freiburg (3 points) can take a big step towards second place in the long-distance duel with Piraeus (1 point/plays against leaders West Ham). This place is enough to overwinter in the Euro League.

“We all know the table and of course we also know what we can achieve in the next two games against Topola. We are prepared for two difficult games in which we will give everything to score,” says Philipp Lienhart (26).
According to Streich, the regular defender was actually one of the candidates on Saturday who would offer himself a break. But Lienhart’s presence at the press conference and the clear Euro announcement indicate that Ösis will be back in the starting eleven.
No matter who is playing: Streich encourages his stars to take the underdog seriously and warns: “We didn’t discuss the role of favorites. But the boys don’t come here to Serbia to underestimate their opponents.”
