SC Freiburg provides a Germany-wide novelty, football | Bundesliga – SWR – Regional

At first glance, disappointment prevailed. After a great season, SC Freiburg missed out on participating in the Champions League for the first time despite a good starting position. And just a week later, coach Christian Streich’s team lost the DFB Cup final against RB Leipzig in a dramatic way – despite an early lead and a long majority.

Great season at SC Freiburg

But already at the party the day after the cup final, pride prevailed. Almost 7,000 fans gave the sports club in Freiburg an enthusiastic welcome. There was little sign of sadness. Instead, supporters and the team celebrated the successful season balance together. Sixth place, participation in the Europa League and the final in Berlin represent an outstanding record.

But not only the Bundesliga men’s team from Breisgau had a great year. The sports club’s women’s soccer team also finished a strong sixth place in the Bundesliga. As a promoted team, the men’s second team confidently and early secured their place in the 3rd division.

And now – on the Whitsun weekend – the U20 women also managed to get promoted to the 2nd women’s Bundesliga. They beat SV 67 Weinberg 6-5 on penalties, after 120 minutes it was 1-1. “The girls always gave their all in a cool year, today’s win is the icing on the cake,” said coach Amin Jungkeit after the game.

The icing on the cake is success for the entire club. Because SC Freiburg will be doing something new in the coming season: all four active teams for men and women play in the highest possible league. A Germany-wide unique selling point – and proof that the success of the people of Breisgau is no coincidence. But, even that doesn’t apply to many clubs, that SC really does a great job at all levels.
