The time has come: The 27th edition of the Oberndorf U19 tournament starts this Friday. Top teams will play for the coveted trophy until Sunday. And of course there: crowd favorite SC Freiburg.

great season

What a terrific season the pros at SC Freiburg have recently had in the Bundesliga! Of course, the anticipation of the youngsters, who will again compete in the U19 tournament in Oberndorf from Friday to Sunday, also increases.

Some Milestones

For the first time, the pros from Breisgau made it into a DFB Cup final and unfortunately lost against RB Leipzig, who were previously thought to be overpowering opponents. In the Bundesliga, Christian Streich’s team held a place in the Champions League for a very long time before finally qualifying directly for the Europa League. And finally, after promotion, the second team held the 3rd league with a midfield place. At the same time, the new stadium was inaugurated. Those were some of the club’s milestones in one year.

Tournament start at 4.30 p.m

The cornerstone for this development is certainly to be found in the consistent and successful youth work of the SC. The Freiburg football school has been working successfully for more than 20 years, and the permeability to the professionals is a role model for clubs at home and abroad. Titles are not the goal here, you are happy to take them with you if it fits – after all, the place in the table says something about the result of the work, but that support and further development are certainly in the foreground.

Lots of big names

The U19s were only placed in midfield last year, while the U17s were somewhat more successful with third place in the Bundesliga. However, it is noteworthy that two national players who were still allowed to play in the U19s were already regulars in the third division team. Your goal, like many others, is to get to the top, and the chances of that in Freiburg are certainly higher than in some other places in the Bundesliga. Players like Christian Günter from Tennenbronn, Mathias Ginter or Oliver Baumann are a good example – they have all won the Oberndorf U19 tournament.

Ruben Müller at the start

Ruben Müller is also pursuing this goal. He was born in Oberndorf and made his first “soccer steps” at SpVgg Oberndorf. His father is a well-known sportsman in Oberndorf, played football himself for a long time and even longer handball for the Oberndorf clubs. Oberndorf and its residents can be very proud that Ruben is playing in Freiburg and therefore also in the U19 tournament at the weekend.

FC Midtjylland against

The U19s from Freiburg, which includes six youth national players from six nations, are trained by the Swiss Federico Valente, who is responsible for the SC for the first time in Oberndorf. He follows his predecessors who were successful in Oberndorf, such as Christian Streich, Lars Vossler, Martin Schweizer and Thomas Stamm, all of whom are still working professionally at Freiburg. With some talents and newcomers, his team is capable of a lot this year – maybe even the 4th victory in Oberndorf, which would make the crowd favorite the sole record holder.

The SC kick off in the tournament’s opening game against the surprise winners of the 2019 tournament: FC Midtjylland. Kick-off is at 4:30 p.m. A dream start – not just for the fans.
