Werder Bremen finally messed up the start of the season. Coach Ole Werner’s team lost 0-1 (0-0) at SC Freiburg despite their courageous appearance and after the cup defeat and the kick-off clap against Bayern, they again didn’t celebrate a sense of achievement. The North Germans have been waiting for a win for eight competitive games across the season.
Returnee Maximilian Philipp (90 + 6) scored the golden goal and made for a dream start with two wins in two games. Only once before (2019) had the Sport-Club started with six points in its 23 Bundesliga seasons. Werder didn’t make enough of his promising transitions, Niclas Füllkrug and Co. lacked determination in the last third.
He expects “a completely different game” than the 0: 4 against Bayern, Werner announced on Sky: “It’s a top team, but we have to put our solutions on the pitch and find space.” That worked time and time again in the early stages, with the energetic Mitchell Weiser in particular making a lot of use of the right flank. At the Sport-Club, the absence of left-back Christian Günter (broken forearm) was noticeable.
The Freiburg made an unusual number of mistakes in the build-up of the game, inviting Werder to make some switching actions. But the North Germans did not finish this without a king’s transfer Naby Keita. Instead, Sallai suddenly appeared free on the penalty area. Jiri Pavlenka first parried the tight low shot and then threw himself into Grifo’s follow-up shot (23′).
SC Freibug – SV Werder Bremen: Both teams pushed for victory
Even after the change, Bremen continued to play courageously in front of 34,700 spectators, but acted too complicated in front of goal. In one of the few shots, Jens Stage aimed centimeters too high (51st). Freiburg had more possession of the ball, tried to control the game – and now acted more compellingly. Grifo put his head on Sallai, but again Pavlenka saved the shot from five meters just as outstandingly as Höler’s follow-up shot.
On the other side, Lukas Kübler cleared a Volley after a corner on the line. Both teams played to win, Freiburg gained advantages in the closing stages. Philipp (68′) aimed at the side netting from a tight angle, substitute Michael Gregoritsch (76′) shot free-standing from five yards and Nicolas Höfler headed the crossbar after a corner (90’+1′). Then Philipp shot in a volley.
