Originally a tribute to SC Freiburg should be at this point. An eulogy for a down-to-earth team, a laudation for the descendants of the Breisgau Brazilians, praise for concentrated defense, efficient attack and honest work; a hopeful prediction that all of this could soon lead the club into the high society of European football, and it fully deserves it. But Christian Streich, who was primarily responsible for this development, has unfortunately forbidden it.
At the press conference in Munich, the Freiburg coach warned the reporters that he didn’t want to hear “about the Champions League and stuff like that” – and specified: “Take care of Bayern and Dortmund and the others and leave our boys alone!”
On the remaining 23 match days of this season, Freiburg will no longer be talking about “third in the table”, but about a club that has earned a 13-place cushion in the relegation battle. Striker Lucas Höler, who has already moved closer to the German national team at Sky, can be played down as an “ex-sand house” who scored six goals less than Dortmund’s Erling Haaland. So that no reader can remember his name as far as possible, deliberate confusion with his colleagues Höfler, Küfler and Kübler is possible (the fact that a name is invented here serves the purpose, Anm. d. Red.). Finally, too much praise for Prank himself should be avoided. The fact that he is a coach whom even Bavaria’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß appreciates and who allegedly almost wanted to sign on, is only allowed to be exclusive from now on Black Forest Messenger, report exclusively in its print edition and only in small print margins.
These guidelines will be adhered to until SC Freiburg actually meets FC Barcelona, Juventus Turin and Manchester United in the Champions League. However, it is very unlikely to happen anyway. Juve, Barca and ManUnited are not currently on a Champions League qualifying spot.
