Leipzig. The handball players of SC DHfK Leipzig won a Bundesliga home game against THW Kiel for the first time since May 17, 2017. Coach Runar Sigtryggsson’s team narrowly defeated the record champions on Saturday afternoon after an inspiring performance in front of 5,309 spectators with 35:34 (16:15). In SC DHfK’s third win of the season, Viggo Kristjansson stood out as the best thrower with nine goals. With 7:11 points, Leipzig moved up to tenth place in the table. “It was a fighting game. We believed in ourselves and made significantly fewer technical errors than last time. “With a fantastic hall behind us, something like that can be successful,” said captain Lukas Binder on MDR.

Both teams had great difficulty finding their way into the game. After seven disjointed minutes with many mistakes on both sides, the score was 2-2. While the Kiel team subsequently produced careless ball losses in their positional attacks and only reliably scored goals through the fast middle, the Leipzig team showed a more variable system of play. Franz Semper gave the hosts the lead by two goals for the first time at 11:9 (22nd minute). However, SC DHfK failed to break away even further in this phase. The Leipzig team repeatedly failed because of THW goalkeeper Tomas Mrkva, who made eleven saves in the first half alone.
After the break, the pace and quality of the game increased significantly. The Kiel team acted with far more precision and pressure than in the first half, but the Leipzig team kept pace and also received a boost from substitute goalkeeper Domenico Ebner. The hosts converted a 23:24 deficit (45th) into a 26:24 lead (49th) with three goals in a row. In the furious final phase, Leipzig kept their lead constant at two to three goals for a long time, also because the powerful Matej Klima was now running hot in the attack. Only one minute before the end did the Kiel team reduce the score to 34:35. On the other side, Andri Runarsson and Moritz Preuss missed the preliminary decision, so the guests still had a chance to equalize. However, the Leipzig team didn’t allow any more shots and deserved to win.
