SBU Detonates Explosives on Russian Military Railway in Siberia: Reports

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) detonated explosives on a Russian military railway in Siberia, an unnamed Ukrainian source told Reuters on Thursday.

The SBU detonated four explosives overnight as a freight train traveled through the Severomui Tunnel in the Republic of Buryatia, north of Mongolia. Explosions caused a fire on the train.

The Kyiv Independent could not independently verify whether the alleged detonations actually occurred.

Russian media earlier confirmed a fire on the train but did not provide details about the suspected explosion.

The Russian Investigative Committee said a train carrying fuel had caught fire, but did not give details of the cause. There are no reports of casualties as a result of the fire.

The site of the alleged attack is 4,000 kilometers west of Ukraine’s border and, if confirmed, would be indicative of Kiev’s ability to conduct military operations deep inside Russia.

The sabotage would not be the first time Ukraine has claimed to have damaged rail infrastructure in Russia. In May, an “unidentified explosive device” detonated on railroad tracks near Snezhetskaya station in Russia’s Bryansk region, causing a freight train to derail.

Since the start of the war, there have been numerous reports of fires breaking out in Russia and other acts of sabotage, which some believe were carried out by the Ukrainian military or local guerrilla groups.
