This year, SBS6 will not broadcast any television programs and commercial breaks on the evening of Christmas Day. Instead, between 6.30pm and 10.30pm there will be only a log fire, accompanied by Christmas music from Sky Radio.
With the initiative, the channel wants to inspire people to pay more attention to each other during the holidays.
“Don’t watch programs for a while, but take all the time for family, friends, neighbors or people who could use some company,” says Marco Louwerens, director of SBS6 owner Talpa. “Good food, good conversations, a game. Time for each other; then we’ll take care of the fire.”
Frozen
Last year, SBS6 broadcast on the evening of December 25, among other things Frozen out, the Disney film from 2013. According to the KijkOnderzoek Foundation, the film attracted 242,000 viewers and did not finish in the top 25 of that day.
Louwerens takes into account that the number of viewers will be even lower on Christmas Day, now that only a crackling fire can be seen for four hours. “We obviously hope that as many people as possible watch our programs. After all, that’s how we earn our living,” he says. “But we are going to do it differently for once.”
