SBS: Banks will not bear savers’ losses if Congress approves debt freeze | nndc | Economy

The Superintendent of Banking, Insurance and AFP, Socorro Heysen, warned that if Congress passes the debt freeze bill, banks will not bear the losses of their savers.

In a dialogue with ”Canal N”, Heysen explained that the SBS will not be able to require financial institutions to make up for the capital lost by citizens, since they may be protected by the same law that the Legislature promotes.

“When a law of Congress compels entities to reprogram debts, it is exempting entities from protecting the savings of the public, because they can say that they have had losses, not due to mismanagement, but due to a law of Congress”, he noted in the Political Agenda.

The official stressed that when banks reprogram credits on their own initiative and incur losses, the regulator may require shareholders to return their clients’ money. But if the decision comes from the State, they can indicate that it was not their responsibility.

Heysen noted that banks are institutions that leverage on their clients’ deposits. “Nine out of every S / 10 that a bank will lend is money from savers”he added.

“No one has asked savers if they want their money to be put at risk by these types of projects”he pointed out.
