Russia’s largest bank “Sberbank” has submitted for registration a trademark with Chinese hieroglyphs – “Сбер банку”, which is going to be used in the region near the border with China. The hieroglyphs mean “bank” in Chinese. China is bordered by the Republic of Altai, Transbaikal, Khabarovsk and Piyuri districts, Amur and Jewish autonomous regions on the Russian side.
Since 2010, “Sberbank” has been operating a representative office in China, and it is planned to open a branch by the end of this year. Western sanctions have been applied to “Sberbank” since Russia’s extended war against Ukraine. The European Union has locked it out of the SWIFT system, the United States and Great Britain have frozen assets and prohibited transactions.
Notably, China recently released an updated set of geographic maps marking the Great Ussuria Island in the Amur River as its territory. According to the 2008 agreement between Russia and China, the island is divided between the two countries, but China marks it on the map as its easternmost point. Moscow has not expressed any protest.
