Sayurbox and Other Companies in Indonesia Terminate Employment Ahead of Eid

Jakarta

E-grocery startup Sayurbox announced termination of employment (PHK) ahead of Eid. The difficult decision was taken for reasons of long-term sustainability of the business.

Sayurbox CEO & Co-Founder Amanda Susanti said the company’s performance grew strongly in the Business to Business (B2B) segment, but the Business to Consumers (B2C) segment market did not grow as predicted during the pandemic.

Therefore, Sayurbox merged several B2C warehouses, consolidated instant delivery services into same day delivery to increase operational efficiency, as well as restructuring teams to other sales channels within the organization.

“This has forced Sayurbox to have to let go of several members of the B2C team. This decision was not taken lightly, but is necessary to ensure the company’s long-term sustainability,” said Amanda in a written statement, Friday (14/4/2023).

Apart from Sayurbox, several companies in Indonesia are also laying off employees near the time of Eid. Here’s the list:

1. Kapal Api Subsidiary

The memory is still fresh regarding the subsidiary of Kapal Api, PT Agel Langgeng, which recently went viral because it closed a factory in Pasuruan. A number of employees were laid off as a result of the factory closure.

According to Management, the factory closure was carried out to save the continuation of PT Agel Langgeng’s operations as a whole. It was also conveyed that the factory that was closed only produced ginger candy to meet export needs.

“PT Agel Langgeng’s factory in Pasuruan only produces ginger candy to meet export needs. For other products it remains in Bekasi and is running normally,” said management.

The company admits that it is ready to pay cash severance pay for 150 workers in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. The company asks all parties to respect the existing legal process and not spread untrue news on social media.

2. Puma factory

Puma’s clothing supplier factory, PT Tuntex Garment Indonesia, located in Cikupa, Tangerang, went bankrupt and laid off 1,163 workers. The company officially stopped production on March 31, 2023 because it experienced losses for 3 consecutive years as a result of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Head of Industrial Relations Disputes and Labor Control Division of the Tangerang Regency Manpower Office, Desyanti, ensures that the company will provide severance pay for workers according to applicable regulations. Including THR.

“For employee rights, all have been given in accordance with statutory provisions, even more. There is additional compensation provided by the company,” he told detikcom, Wednesday (5/4/2023).
