2023 witnessed a notable performance by SAYCO, the Society of Authors and Composers of Colombia, which has marked a milestone in the defense of copyright in the country.
Despite the economic and technological challenges faced by the industry in the past year, including the threat of a recession and changes in the digital entertainment landscape, SAYCO managed to achieve a historic revenue figure, amounting to approximately $44.5 million, which which represented an income growth rate of 18.30.
This achievement not only reflects the commitment to defending the repertoires represented, but also the dedication to guaranteeing a prosperous future for the more than 10,000 families that they represent in Colombia through their affiliates. César Ahumada, general manager of the Society, highlights This is a sign of the passion that they put into the development of their work every day, as well as their teamwork and unwavering commitment to the protection of copyright.
“Our strategic approach has focused on the defense of the repertoires of our clients, both in the judicial field and in the entertainment and business space, thus seeking to maximize collections and promoting the correct use of the works by the members. users,” notes the manager.
A vision for the future
Looking ahead to 2024, SAYCO faces an increasingly uncertain environment, which demands solid strategic planning. The Company has proposed to formulate planning based on the method of future scenarios, covering a period of at least five years. The main objective is to prepare for changes in the environment and use them for the benefit of Colombian authors and composers, thus consolidating itself as a model collective management society in the region.
“To achieve this, we are aiming to draw strategic lines and carry out a series of sustained projects over time, with the vision of transforming ourselves into a renewed society that integrates its experience of almost eight decades at the service of creators. This long-term vision aligns with the continued commitment to positively impact the lives of authors and composers, ensuring a prosperous future for the Colombian music industry,” Ahumada emphasizes.
In this same scenario, its commitment to Colombian culture is reaffirmed for the current year, just as it has done in previous years. His contribution covers a wide range of cultural events ranging from the emblematic Barranquilla Carnival to the renowned Vallenato Festival.
Beyond financial support, SAYCO is actively involved in these events, promoting the participation of its talented authors and composers. This commitment extends to regional festivals throughout the national territory, where it not only sponsors, but also collaborates in the organization and development of cultural activities. Its presence in festivals such as San Juan, the Villanueva festival and festivals throughout the region in Meta, highlights the fundamental role that the Society plays today in the promotion and preservation of the country’s rich cultural diversity.
It is worth mentioning that, although SAYCO has made clear its commitment to the defense of copyright and its support for Colombian culture, some challenges have arisen, such as public claims by some partners through social networks, which have been addressed promptly and diplomatically. “In these situations, the invitation is for associates to remember that they have different official channels at their disposal to transmit their concerns to us directly and reliably,” Ahumada points out.
On the global stage
Meanwhile, it is necessary to point out that this Society is in an outstanding position compared to other similar societies in the world. Being part of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) and the Latin Author Single Window, SAYCO actively participates in international meetings, consolidating itself as one of the most respected societies globally.
“With a focus on the process of documentation of works, we lead this aspect among collecting societies, which demonstrates the firm commitment to the protection of copyright. In addition, the Company is subject to a series of rigorous controls and audits both nationally and internationally, including the National Directorate of Copyright (DNDA) and CISAC, which guarantees transparency and compliance with established regulations. the manager highlights.
The next General Assembly of Members, scheduled for March 21 and 22, provides a space for accountability and decision-making for the benefit of associates, demonstrating SAYCO’s commitment to the well-being of its members.
