Say goodbye to the mouth cap? For these people the masks are here to stay

The Brabant is determined. “Whatever the cabinet decides, the mouth cap is here to stay.” Why? “I haven’t had a cold since wearing them.”

Joke is in student transport. “When I drive, I have about eight children in my van. I used to catch a cold at least three times in the winter and invariably got a respiratory infection on top. I see the mouth cap as a tool to stay healthy.”

eased

If it is up to the cabinet, the mouth cap obligation will become relaxed from next Saturday. We will hear during the corona press conference tomorrow exactly how the rules will apply.

If it is not possible to keep 1.5 meters away, for example in public transport, the mask will probably remain mandatory. This is what Minister Hugo de Jonge said about it earlier this week:

Shops such as Kruidvat and Trekpleister have announced that they will continue to offer mouth caps for the time being, even if wearing them may soon be no longer necessary in many places in the Netherlands.

The stores think that even after further relaxation by the cabinet, there will still be demand for the non-medical face masks. For example, when people go on vacation.

Benefits of mouth masks

Retailers also see benefits in the mouth masks and also receive many questions about the new relaxation. Like the Jumbo in Huissen. Not everyone will be happy if the masks are no longer mandatory, says supermarket owner Martin Reuselaars.

The supermarket owner would have secretly preferred to see the mouth cap obligation apply for a while. Until everyone is vaccinated.

“Of course such a patch is not nice for your face, but I have a lot of young staff and not everyone has a shot yet,” says Reuselaars. “There are cashiers who have already told me that they would rather keep their mouth caps or screens on. And customers have also come to me that they are concerned if mouth caps no longer have to be worn.”

Research: nice prospect

I&O Research investigated what we are most looking forward to if we can go back to normal after corona. Researcher Peter Kanne: “Not having to wear a face mask anymore is the most mentioned with 67 percent.”

Being able to touch or hug each other again is mentioned by 52 percent of those surveyed, Kanne says. “And half of them would really like ‘not to have to think about everything all the time’. 43 percent of those surveyed mention “no need to keep a meter and a half away.”

Many people are saying on social media that, despite the plans to relax, they will continue to wear the mouth makers now that corona has not gone away yet. Like Twitterer Marianne. “Also because of the arrival of the delta variant,” she says.

And Wil tweets: “Whatever they come up with in The Hague, I’ll stop it. Corona is not gone yet.”

Joke Abbenhuis believes that everyone should make their own choice. “If I decide to wear my mask, that’s my choice. Let everyone appreciate it, I would say.”

Do non-medical face masks work?

This is what the RIVM writes: “Non-medical mouth caps probably only help to a limited extent in preventing the contamination of others. Face masks are therefore no substitute for hygiene measures, keeping distance, avoiding crowds and staying home in case of complaints.

The effectiveness of a non-medical mask depends strongly on the quality of the materials, fit and the way in which the user handles the mask. The term mouth cap is actually not quite right, because it must also be worn over the nose to have an effect.”
