Saxony’s Prime Minister Commemorates Victims of June 17 Uprising in GDR

Dresden (dpa/sn) – Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer remembered the victims of the popular uprising of June 17, 1953 in the GDR on Sunday. The day is of great importance for the history of democracy in Germany and Europe and is an important day of remembrance, the CDU politician said on Sunday. With numerous events, the memory should be kept alive and encouraged to rethink the importance of the freedom that was fought for at the time and the current challenges for democracy.

In June 1953, workers protested across East Germany. The reason for this was, among other things, an increase in the working standard – more should be done for the same money. However, many demonstrators questioned the SED state in principle, calling for free elections and a different economic system. A state of emergency was declared within hours. Soviet tanks and the People’s Police moved out. In the end, 55 people were dead. More than 10,000 were arrested, 1,500 were sentenced to prison.
