[21.7.2022] By the end of this year, all schools in Saxony-Anhalt should have a fiber optic connection. A digital map and a map app provide information about the current progress.
By the end of 2022, almost 900 locations of general and vocational schools in Saxony-Anhalt are to be connected to the fiber optic network. The Ministry for Infrastructure and Digital (MID) is now pointing this out. The state bears 100 percent of the costs for setting up the fiber optic connections, including technical equipment and security components. In addition, the operating costs will be covered in full for two years. A total of more than 70 million euros are available for this; around 82,000 euros per school.
According to the ministry, the current progress of the “Schools on the Net” project can now be accessed at any time via a digital map on the MID website. There is also a map app that shows the implementation status at the schools participating in the project. Information on the fiber optic connections can be filtered and displayed here by district, locality and even individual schools. In addition, a compilation of frequently asked questions provides a transparent insight into the Schools on the Net project.
“At the end of 2019, we were the first federal state ever to start equipping all schools in the state between Zeitz and Arendsee with this gigabit connection,” reports Lydia Hüskens, Minister for Infrastructure and Digital Affairs. “At the beginning of 2022, the project was restructured. This enabled a significant acceleration of the project implementation to be achieved. Internal and external processes were optimized and necessary contractual adjustments were made. The aim was to further accelerate the project and complete it this year.” According to the ministry, exactly 670 schools in the country currently have fast internet. According to the ministry, civil engineering work has been carried out over a length of around 750 kilometers since the start of the project. The company Deutsche Telekom has laid almost 2,500 kilometers of cable and set up around 650 network distributors in the respective municipalities. (ve)
