Saxony Allocates Funds for Expansion of Chemnitz-Leipzig Railway Line

Dresden.

Saxony is providing additional funds for planning further expansion of the Chemnitz-Leipzig railway line. As the Ministry of Economics announced on Sunday, 8.4 million euros are earmarked for planning the southern Geithain-Chemnitz section. According to the ministry, the planning should be completed by mid-2025, and the route could be put into operation by 2030.

A financing agreement between the Free State and Deutsche Bahn has now been signed, it said. According to the information, 3.8 million euros have already flowed into the preliminary planning.

The background is the electrification of the Leipzig-Chemnitz railway line, which is an important traffic artery in Saxony. While the electrification and the double-track expansion between Leipzig and Geithain are to be paid for with funds from the investment law for the coal regions, the southern section of the route was included in the federal transport route plan – but only with the electrification of the existing, largely single-track route.

According to Economics Minister Martin Dulig (SPD), this would create a “bottleneck”. “In order to prevent this, we decided to expand the second track between Geithain and Chemnitz as much as possible.” With expansion and electrification, the prerequisites for more traffic on the climate-friendly rail will be created, according to Martin Walden, Deutsche Bahn Group Representative for Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.
