20 new electric buses are to drive through Dresden in the future

Dresden (dpa / sn) – With 20 new electric buses, the Dresden Transport Authority (DVB) wants to operate two lines in the city electrically in the future. From Tuesday, 13 of these would initially be used on bus routes 68 and 81, a DVB spokesman said on Monday. Eleven articulated electric buses are on the 22-kilometer route of the 68, which runs right through the center of Dresden. According to DVB, the effects on climate protection are greatest there.

In total, around 875 tons of carbon dioxide would be saved per year by converting to electrical engineering. “In view of the noticeable climate changes, we need more environmentally friendly mobility,” said Dresden Mayor Dirk Hilbert (FDP) on Monday. By the end of August, all 20 new buses are to be delivered from the factory to Dresden, which according to DVB cost 17.4 million euros.

In June, the Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB) opened a bus station in the west of the city with 50 electric charging stations. The 185 LVB buses are to be converted to electric or hydrogen technology by 2037. According to a spokeswoman for Chemnitzer Verkehrs-AG (CVAG), no purely electrically powered vehicles are in use in Chemnitz.

However, there is already a fleet of 15 hybrid buses, which is to be increased further. There are also plans to convert 25 buses for city tours in Leipzig and Dresden to electric operation in the coming years. According to Stadtrundfahrt Dresden GmbH, the project for this started in August.
