UCAYALI. The Second Criminal Appeals Chamber of the Superior Court of Justice of Ucayali sentenced José Carlos Estrada Huayta and Hugo Soria to 28 years and 3 months in prison. According to the ruling, Estrada and Soria are the direct perpetrators of the murders of Edwin Chota, Jorge Ríos, Leoncio Quintisima and Francisco Pinedo, indigenous leaders of the Alto Tamaya-Saweto native community, in September 2014. Likewise, they were determined those sentenced receive civil compensation of S/200,000.
While Eurico Mapes and the brothers Josimar and Segundo Atachi Félix will continue the research process. Given this, it was determined that Mapes and the Atachis sign every month in the superior court, remain in their residences and avoid any contact with the aggrieved.
Case Saweto
In September 2014, four leaders of the Alto Tamaya-Saweto native community were murdered. The victims who were identified as Edwin Chota, Jorge Ríos, Leoncio Quintisima and Francisco Pinedo had denounced and fought against the illegal logging that was taking place in their town.

The oral trial in the first instance began on June 20, 2022 and ended eight months later. The reading of the sentence took place on February 27, 2023, where 28 years and three months of effective imprisonment was handed down against the alleged perpetrators. However, in August 2023, said sentence was annulled.
After that, the new oral trial began on November 2, 2023 and concluded on March 15, 2024. Today the conviction was read against the four people involved in the murder of environmental defenders.
After 10 years, the relatives of the leaders of the Alto Tamaya-Saweto native community await justice and a ruling that dignifies their fight for the co-authors.
