Savona prison has closed, we want to make a new one

Sant’Agostino closed by the then minister Andrea Orlando (Pd): Savona the only province without prison

“I presented a question to Parliament on the Savona prison in December 2019 and then a question in the Chamber in November 2020. The closure of Sant’Agostino occurred in December 2015, when the Minister of Justice was the current candidate for governor of the centre-left Andrea Orlando (Pd).

It was he who signed the closure decree, without however thinking about identifying another site. So the prisoners were transferred and the problem of prison overcrowding increased in Liguria with all the serious consequences that, unfortunately, we now see in the everyday news.

We are not those of ‘no’ and closures in the area. There was an interest from the League in finding a new location for the prison and discussions with the Municipalities of Albenga, Savona and Val Bormida. It was therefore decided, all together, to indicate the Savona hinterland as the ideal place for the new structure.

In this sense, I have already spoken with our political leaders in Rome, who have shown a positive interest in the issue.

Unlike Orlando, which made Savona the only province without a prison in Liguria, we will continue to fight to obtain a new prison, necessary for safety in our territory”.

This was declared today by the former Savonese MP and candidate in the regional elections Sara Foscolo (Lega).
