Save the Children confirms that two employees were killed in Myanmar

It is with deep sadness that we confirm that two members of Save the Children were among the at least 35 people, including women and children, who were killed on Friday, December 24 in an attack by Myanmar’s military in Kayah state, it says in a press release from the organization.

The two were men aged 32 and 28 who conducted relief work in Myanmar. They were on their way to the office after carrying out humanitarian work nearby when they ended up in the middle of the incident.

Save the Children explains that the military junta’s forces forced people out of the cars, arrested some and killed the rest.

– This news is absolutely terrible. Violence against innocent civilians, including aid workers, is unacceptable. This senseless attack violates international humanitarian law, says Save the Children director Inger Ashing.

Save the Children condemns the attack and says that an investigation into the massacre is underway.

Aid organizations, activists and the UN have expressed strong concern about the escalating military violence against civilians in the country.
