The feature aims to improve users’ collaborative and interactive experience on the platform through sharing interests and adding contributions to the libraries together in their group chat or a one-to-one DM. That being said, a user can now share posts with any individual friend or group of friends, and instead of the posts being lined up and lost between chats, they can now be curated as collections of posts that reflect their interest in an engaged and Community theme are relevant space. The inspiration behind this seems to come from Pinterest, which introduced the Group Boards feature back in 2018, which works in the same way to allow users to save and collaborate on their platform.
To create a shared library from your Instagram feed yourself, all you have to do is tap on the bookmark icon in the bottom right corner of the post, then select the option to create a new collaborative collection, name the board and turn on the “Allow friends to join this collection“ Peculiarity. Up to 250 people can be added to this collection. The same can also be done within a chat directly from a direct message. However, it’s worth noting that anyone can access it in chat to add or remove images from the shared collection.
The content stored in these collections can include reels, content from the Discover section, individual feeds, and more. Furthermore, it is important to mention that this does not invade the privacy of personal accounts. Any post added to a shared collection from a private account is only accessible to users who follow that account. If the creator of the post removes it from their account, the post is also removed from the collection.
Once a collaborative collection is created, it cannot be restored as a private collection. Likewise, no private collection can be shared with others.
Instagram has been working to make the media platform more business- and brand-friendly, as we’ve seen with the launch of the new broadcast feature called Channels and also Ads in search results. Now that Instagram now allows you to save posts with friends, this collaborative collections feature is a step in the right direction to encourage more social interaction and engagement.
