AdBlue. One of the most important and discussed devices currently on the entire automotive scene, especially as far as diesel remains. It seems that there is a shortcut to spending less, with a ‘trick’ that would allow many motorists to save a lot.
However, and it is good that this concept is very clear, it is absolutely illegal. A procedure definitely to be avoided, if you don’t want to run into much bigger troubles than too expensive fuel. What is it and what is it for?
In the meantime, let’s try to understand what AdBlue actually is. It is a real ally in terms of the use of diesel engines; an additive composed of a highly pure 32.5% urea aqueous solution capable of transforming nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water in a gaseous elemental form. It is a synthetic, colorless and odorless product. It is not dangerous as it is neither flammable nor toxic.
It is used exclusively on diesel engines and serves to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions from exhaust gases, with the aim of reducing them by 90%. AdBlue makes it possible to eliminate Nox (a combination of two of the most important nitrogen oxides) through an exhaust gas post-treatment device, transported inside dedicated tanks which are usually located near the fuel tank. Its use is mandatoryand is sold practically everywhere.
It can be found at gas stations, but also at dealerships, hardware stores, garages, and on the web. Its cost can reach two euros per liter in the respective filling stations, but increases considerably online: between 10 and 16 euros. How to use it? Obtain demineralised water – not from the tap – mix it with the additive in question and pour it all into the dedicated tank (not the diesel one). Once this is done, store the AdBlue and refueling kit away from dust and dirt at temperatures below 30 degrees.

AdBlue can be excluded from inside a diesel-powered vehicle, as a video that went viral on Tik Tok shows.
