“Give life, donate blood” – this is the slogan used by the blood donation center of the German Red Cross (DRK) to promote blood donations. World Blood Donor Day, which was celebrated on June 14th, is intended to draw attention to their importance.
Blood is a valuable commodity because it cannot be produced artificially. And every healthy person has a sufficient amount of this “lifeblood” so that they can regularly donate some of their own blood and thus save the lives of others. Especially at the beginning of summer, holidays and public holidays in many federal states prevent potential donors from going to blood donation campaigns.
But the number of accidents and injuries increases, especially in the warm season, when people like to spend their free time outside. People who are admitted to hospital emergency rooms and need quick surgery often need the right blood supplies quickly. If there are bottlenecks in the blood supply, this can mean acute danger to life. The blood donation service publishes the current blood supply status on its website at www.blutspende.de
According to the DRK blood donation service in Baden-Württemberg-Hesse, around 94 percent of the German population consider the topic of “blood donation” to be important, but only 3.5 percent are blood donors. For this reason, all blood donors are encouraged to donate regularly and, if possible, to bring other potential first-time donors to a blood donation campaign.
Any healthy person over the age of 18 can donate blood (first-time donors must be a maximum of 65 years old). Further requirements are listed on the DRK blood donation service website.
Blood donation campaigns take place regularly in all regions of Germany. These are usually coordinated by the DRK blood donation service in the respective federal state. Gyms, community centers, meeting halls and even church buildings are then used for a few hours for mobile blood donation appointments. Blood can also be donated outside of a special blood donation campaign – for example in hospitals.
Blood donation campaigns are also carried out in buildings of the New Apostolic Church in the District Church of Southern Germany. Since the church buildings and their adjoining rooms also have the function of a community center in a certain sense, such charity events are allowed to take place in the adjoining rooms of the church buildings.
A blood donation campaign took place on May 4, 2018 in the New Apostolic Church of the Karlsruhe-Nordost community.
