Saudi women’s rights activist Loujain Al-Hathloul was released from prison

Saudi women’s rights activist Loujain Al-Hathloul she was released from prison. This was reported by his family, explaining however that Loujain Al-Hathloul “is not free”, and that he will have to comply with various restrictions, including a ban on leaving Saudi Arabia for the next five years.

Al-Hathloul, 31, was arrested in 2018 for her campaign against driving a ban on women in Saudi Arabia on a terrorist charge. Last December 28 it had been condemned to 5 years and 8 months in prison. Later, part of the sentence was suspended.

Amnesty International and other human rights organizations had called for his release and documented the torture and sexual violence Al-Hathloul had suffered since the beginning of his detention. A few weeks after his arrest, he was formally in Saudi Arabia removed the ban which prevented women from driving.
