A Saudi princess and her daughter have been released after nearly three years of captivity in the capital Riyadh. This was announced by a human rights organization that had championed the case of 57-year-old Princess Basmah bint Saud, who is a niece of King Salman. Her legal adviser has confirmed the news.
Basmah, who is known in her country as a champion of women’s rights, was arrested with her daughter Suhoud in early 2019 when they were about to fly to Switzerland for medical treatment. They were detained in a prison where many political prisoners are held.
The Saudi authorities have never disclosed what the two were suspected of and no charges have ever been filed, according to human rights organization ALQST. Her immediate family said in a statement two years ago that her detention was likely related to her criticism of “wrongdoing” in the country.
