Saudi maritime tensions rise… Oil tanker is attacked by’explosive’ ship

The Associated Press reported that an oil tanker moored in the sea near Jeddah, a port city in the Red Sea in southwestern Saudi Arabia, was attacked.

The Saudi Ministry of Energy said that “a tanker anchored at a fuel terminal in Jeddah this morning was attacked by a ship carrying explosives,” Saudi State-run SPA news agency said.

This resulted in a small fire, but it was successfully extinguished, so there was no damage to people and facilities, and it did not affect the supply of crude oil, the Ministry of Energy said.

It is reported that 22 people were aboard the ship under the Singapore shipping company.

The Saudi Ministry of Energy did not comment on what was behind the tanker attack.

In Saudi seas, an oil tanker explosion occurred last month, at the time, following a mine attack that was believed to have been attributed to the Yemeni Huti rebels.

The incident has raised tensions on the Saudi coast again, and the UKMTO, operated by the British Navy, says it is under investigation.
