Saudi calls for boycotting all Turkish products because of Erdogan

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

The head of the Saudi Arabian Chamber of Commerce Ajlan al-Ajlan called for a boycott of all those on Turkey, including imports, investment and tourism.

This he made after the hurtful comments of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“Boycotting all Turks, whether at the level of imports, investment or tourism, is the responsibility of every Saudi, merchant and consumer, in response to the ongoing hostility from the Turkish government towards our leadership, our country and our citizens,” said al-Ajlan. on Twitter, quoted from Al Arabiya, Tuesday (6/10).

Erdogan has previously said that several countries in the Arabian Gulf are targeting Turkey and pursuing policies that destabilize the region.

“It must not be forgotten that these countries did not exist yesterday, and may not be tomorrow; however, we will continue to fly our flag in this region forever, by Allah’s permission,” Erdogan said last Thursday before the Turkish General Assembly.

Al Ajlan said that if his call was followed it would affect thousands of Turkish exporters at a time when the country’s economy was faltering.

The Turkish lira has dived, dropping to a record low against the US dollar last week.

The impact of the coronavirus combined with the currency crisis that began in 2018 has led to a sharp recession. Turkey’s central bank gross reserves have fallen by almost half this year.

Regarding the collapse of the Turkish economy, President Erdogan blamed foreign actors. He claimed in May that foreign plots were trying to undermine state trade.

Meanwhile, opponents of the government have instead blamed the policies of finance minister Berat Albayrak, who is Erdogan’s son-in-law.

Former Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said last month that Albayrak “destroyed the Turkish economy” in his speech and nepotism was the only reason for Albayrak’s appointment.

“Someone needs to be held accountable for the loss of the value of the lira,” Davutoglu said, according to the Turkish news agency Wall.

Another argument made by Erdogan’s critics is that the Turkish government is more concerned with winning on foreign battlefields than fixing the economic crisis.

In addition, Erdogan is also considered to have used large state resources to fight in Syria, Libya and now Azerbaijan.
