FPI spokesman Slamet Maarif asked residents to pray for Habib Rizieq’s safety. He also hoped that Habib Rizieq’s relationship with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia would remain good.

Slamet said that his party was monitoring the actions of the Saudi Arabian authorities to arrest clerics. “Yes, we just monitor,” said Slamet.

A growing issue in Saudi society, the arrest of this cleric is linked to criticism of the crown prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS).

Since 2017, when the crown prince took power, he has cracked down on clerics, journalists, academics and cyber activists for their critical views of how he governs the country and his plans to turn Saudi Arabia secular.

In addition, Prince MBS is also intensifying an anti-corruption campaign. Most recently, there are two members of the royal family who were fired for alleged corruption. They are Prince Fahd bin Turki Abdulaziz Al Saud, commander of the armed forces of the Saudi-led military coalition fighting in Yemen. However, critics have called this an attempt by Prince MBS to save the throne.
