Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Saudi Arabian television media suddenly aired a comedy sketch that made fun of US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
This SNL-style skit from the show ‘Studio 22’ depicts Joe Biden as forgetful and features Kamala Harris, played by a man who must guide Biden to the podium and help him when he loses his mind.
Quoting Dailymail, Saturday (16/04/2022), the one-minute clip made Biden leave the stage, forget the name of the Russian president, fall asleep in the middle of a sentence and call his Vice President ‘First Lady’.
“Listen to me,” said the President. “I have a very important message for you. The message is…”
And then he fell asleep.
“We’re going to talk about the crisis in Africa,” Biden said. Harris had to correct him once again, bringing him back on track to discuss Russia.
It ended with Kamala Harris picking up a sleeping Joe Biden and demanding that the audience “clap your President right now”.
‘Studio 22’ aired on Saudi state-owned MBC media, where the media is heavily censored and controlled by the government, shows that the depiction is more than just a comic book.
Relations between the US and Saudi Arabia, two allies in a mutually supportive but transactional relationship since signing the 1951 Mutual Defense Assistance Treaty, are going through difficult times.
In February, the Saudi government rejected a US request to increase oil production in light of extremely high energy prices globally, by telegraming the lack of cooperation between the two allies.
In addition, the US Intelligence Community has publicly assessed that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered the killing of journalist and US citizen Jamal Khashoggi in 2018, putting pressure on the US to hold him accountable.
