RIYADH – Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) of Saudi Arabia Prince Faisal bin Farhan received a phone call from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United States (US) Anthony Blinken on Friday (18/8/2023).
The two officials discussed the importance of stopping military escalation and ending violence in Sudan during their phone conversation, according to a report by Saudi state news agency SPA.
Blinken also praised the Kingdom’s efforts earlier this month in hosting representatives from 40 countries in Jeddah to discuss the crisis in Ukraine and find a solution.
Middle East stability was also discussed and the two officials emphasized the need for efforts to build peace in the region.
In recent years, the relationship between Saudi Arabia and the United States has continued to experience dynamic changes.
Changes in governance in both countries, especially with the election of a new President in the United States and reform steps in Saudi Arabia under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, have brought about changes in the approach and focus of bilateral relations.
The war between Russia and Ukraine also affected the relationship between the US and Saudi Arabia. Riyadh is among the countries reluctant to apply sanctions against Russia.
Meanwhile, Western countries implemented tough sanctions against Russia. In fact, Saudi Arabia has the impression of being close to Russia and not in line with the steps taken by the West in this conflict.
