Saudi Arabia will soon have a “liquor heaven”

Jakarta

crown prince Saudi Arabia Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) has the ambition to build an “alcohol paradise”. The location is in the town of Neom.

Saudi Arabia under MbS built the futuristic city of Neom. The plan was announced in January 2021 and is expected to be completed by 2030.

Neom is one of Saudi Arabia’s projects to be launched depending on tourism, industry and renewable energy. So far, Saudi Arabia has largely depended on the oil sector for its economy. Neom is part of Saudi Vision 2030 and is expected to be completed by 2030.

Of Neom, Saudi Arabian authorities will allow the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages, wine, cocktails and champagne in a resort. Neom is part of a mega Saudi project on Sindalah Island near the Red Sea. The resort is scheduled to open in 2023.

“Saudi Arabia will open bars and allow retail stores to sell wine openly in the tourist zone,” according to a Saudi government document reviewed by the Wall Street Journal.

In the photo included in the Neom project plan document, it shows a bartender pouring cocktails into premium bottles such as vodka, whiskey and wine, as quoted by the Middle East Monitor.

In the photo, guests can be seen sitting on chairs as they talk. On the table was a bottle of alcohol and some slices of cake on a plate.

In May, former Neom City Tourism Chief Andrew McEvoy said Neom would be protected by special economic laws.

“[UU akan sesuai dengan] ambitions of those we’re trying to attract to work and live here, ”McEvoy said.

He went on to tell the story: “Alcohol cannot be served at the table”.

If it is true that Saudi Arabia will implement the consumption and sale of alcohol, this will be a new twist for the famous conservative government. However, some are also concerned that the plan will spell cultural change in Saudi Arabia.

During this period, the Kingdom prohibited the consumption or sale of alcohol in any form throughout the country. Violators of the law may face penalties in the form of fines, imprisonment and flogging.
