Saudi Arabia: Warning about toxic types of potatoes distributed in vegetable markets, and an expert explains how to distinguish them from healthy potatoes

The specialist warned Fahd Al-Saeed Avoid eating potatoes that have green spots on them, indicating that this is a sign of the presence of a toxic compound called “solanine.” This compound occurs naturally in potatoes as a defense mechanism against fungi and insects, but it may pose a risk to human health when consumed in large quantities.

Al-Saeed explained that solanine is mainly concentrated in potato peels and sprouts, indicating that exposure to light stimulates production. Therefore, it is recommended that you buy potatoes that seem to have any green spots on them, even if they are small, and make sure to store them in a dark, dry place to prevent this compound from creation

Al-Saeed pointed out that peeling potatoes and removing sprouts helps get rid of 30 to 80% of solanine, underscoring the need to avoid green potatoes altogether, especially with children and the elderly, as they are more susceptible to poisoning.

He also said that the symptoms of solanine poisoning range from nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, and in severe cases, they may lead to nervous system disorders such as headaches, dizziness, and hallucinations. In rare cases, poisoning can cause coma or even death.

Al-Saeed called on consumers to ensure that they buy potatoes from reliable sources and handle them properly to maintain their safety and avoid the risks of food poisoning.
