NEW DELHI – Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt are planning to join BRICS. Their potential membership offers could be discussed and answered at next year’s summit in South Africa.

The statement was made by BRICS President Purnima Anand to Russian media on Thursday (14/7/2022).

“All of these countries have shown their interest in joining (BRICS) and are preparing to apply for membership. I believe this is a good move, as expansion is always seen as good; it will definitely increase the global influence of BRICS,” he told the Russian newspaper Izvestia.

The BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) account for more than 40% of the global population and nearly a quarter of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP).

The bloc’s stated goals include promoting peace, security, development and cooperation globally, and contributing to humanitarian development.

Anand said the issue of expansion was raised during this year’s BRICS summit, which took place in late June in Beijing.

The president of the BRICS Forum said he hoped the accession of Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt would not take too much time, given that they were “already involved in the process.”

However, he doubted that all three would join the alliance at the same time.
