A Saudi F1 team’s plans may be in the works. Saudi Arabia recently caused a stir with rumors that its state-owned investment agency was looking to buy F1’s commercial rights for $20 billion. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has denied that, but with Saudi Arabia’s growing commercial interests in F1 and a grand prix already running, a national team could be the next step.
“Our relationship with F1 has developed successfully over the past 40 years,” said Prince Khalid bin Sultan bin Abdullah Al-Faisal Al-Saud of the Saudi Automobile Federation. “This legacy will lead us to racing and may one day lead to the creation of our own F1 team,” added one of Saudi Arabia’s ruling families. “And we want to see our drivers in F1 who can compete at the highest level. We are really passionate about motorsport and want to contribute to the future of this sport by playing a big role. ”
